Mountains Ovčar (peak at 985m above sea level) and Kablar (peak at 885m above sea level) are located in central Serbia, 15 kilometers west of town of Čačak. These two mountains form picturesque Ovčar-Kablar gorge through which flows Zapadna Morava river. The gorge has very steep sides and double locked meanders. The area of Ovčar/Kablar Gorge is, because of wide variety of flora and fauna, nine active monasteries and exquisite beauty, declared as Area of exceptional beauty, I Category Protected Area.
Ovčar and Kablar are popular among mountaineers and climbers since half of 20th century when first trails were marked. Today there is 10 marked trails totaling more than 90 kilometers. Profiles of trails vary from easy to demanding, so it is possible to choose appropriate route for any level of fitness or experience. From easy walking to long hiking tour.
Common starting, and ending point, for trekking is at the bottom of the Gorge, in Ovčar Banja, more accurately from Mountaineering Hut where participants can spend the night if ascents to both mountain tops are planned. Vertical difference for ascent to Ovčar mountain is 706m, and for Kablar 610m. Great number of trails allows wide variety of routes to chose from for both ascent and descent so the length of the trail varies between 10/15km or 4/6 hours. Most of the trails leads near one or more monasteries where fresh drinking water is provided. Along the trails there are several fresh drinking water sources.
At the top of Ovčar Mountain, as well as of Kablar mountain there are viewpoints overlooking meandering Zapadna Morava River. The view from the top of the Kablar Mountain is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Serbia. In Ovčar Banja (Ovčar Spa) there is a thermal spring of sulfur rich water with healing properties. Many hikers and mountaineers often, after the trail, enjoy relaxing in Spa Center built around thermal spring.
