Rtanj is the mountain located in eastern Serbia and it represents natural phenomenon of karst relief. Mountain suddenly rises from the flat land and it forms almost regular limestone pyramid. Highest point of Rtanj is peak called Šiljak 1561 meters high above sea level.
Due to its specific shape, many legends are told regarding Rtanj, and some scientists are trying to prove that it actually was a pyramid sometime in the past.
Rtanj is one of the most favorite mountaineering destinatinations in Serbia. This mountain attracts mountaineers during whole year, both beginners and experienced mountaineers who are training physical condition for more severe ascents around the world. It is possible to reach the top along marked trails from different sides, even without the help of a tour guide. However, climbing in the winter conditions is not recommended for the beginners or mountaineers without proper experience and equipment.
The stay on the top of Rtanj offers memorable and pleasant experience. If the visibility is good on top of Rtanj, you can see the mountains all across Serbia.
On the very top of Siljak, are the remains of chapel built by Greta Minh in 1934. in honor of her late husband Julius Minh, owner of the coal mine in the foothills of Rtanj. The building material for the chapel was transported on donkeys all the way to the top, and miners of the coal mine participated in building of the chapel. Chapel was blown up and razed by vandals in the nineties of 20th century, believing that there was gold hidden inside.
The most popular mountaineering events on Rtanj are “Christmas ascent” in january and “Night ascent” in july. These events are hosted by local mountaineering club “Šiljak” from Boljevac, and every year these events attract up to thousand mountaineers from the whole region.
Mountain Rtanj is famous for the medical herbs that grow on the slopes of the mountain and from which the popular Rtanj tea is made. All the water from higher points descends to the mountain foothills through number of crevices inside the very mountain, which are characteristical for karst relief, and because of that there are a great number of sources of drinking water in the foothills.
From other tourist and mountaineering destinations near Rtanj you can visit: mountain Malinik with Lazar’s canyon and Lazar’s cave, Mountain Veliki Krš and Borski Stol near town of Bor, Grza - popular place for field trips, Sokobanja - spa center, archeological finding Felix Romuliana (3rd century).
