Coming from a great love for nature and hiking, a year after her lung transplantation in Vienna, Sandra Zivkovic (25) has decided to organize mountaineering ascent in honor of her donor, under the name “In honor of my donor”, on mountain Tupiznica, near Knjazevac, her hometown in Eaestern Serbia. In its first year, in 2014, Sandra has climbed up the mountain with her closest friends, while one year later decided for it to grow into something much more serious, given the prejudice and fears people have when it comes to organ donation. Since 2015, attendees of this mountaineering ascent have had the opportunity to hear a short story of a person who had an organ transplantation, and a speech from a Serbian Ministry of Health representative. This year, mounteering ascent will be held for the 4th time.
There is no hiking that is “ordinary”, but this one has something special, which makes it different from the others. This mountaineering ascent is organized in honor of the person whose lungs Sandra breathes through, and in addition to that, it has educational and humane character.
Educational – because you will learn about the possibilities of transplantations and importance of pledging organs, and also about the Cystic Fibrosis, a rare disease from which around 70.000 people in the world, and about 200 people in Serbia have been affected. Humane – because you will have the opportunity to sign a donor card, and because the whole amount collected from sold t-shirts (with the logo of the ascent) will be paid to the Serbian Association that gathers people with Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that Sandra has from birth, which is the reason why she had lung transplantation.
Mountaineering Ascent “In honor of my donor” is organized by Association “Waterfall”, in cooperation with the Mountaineering Association “Babin Zub” from Knjaževac, and supported by Serbian Ministry of Health and Radio Television of Serbia, through their national campaign “Prolong life”
We invite all of you to pay respect to the person whose lungs Sandra breaths through, and by doing this, make people aware of the importance of organ donation and saving lives.
